Tips on starting a youth drum line?
I work with a youth/scout group (called Pathfinders) and 3-6 of the young teens want to start a drum line or drum corps. How should I go about doing this? I've looked through a bunch of different drum corp websites and didn't find much help. What are some good rudiments (and sheet music) for this? What specific instruments (and how many of each) should I get? We don't really have any money, so suggestions on where to get a bargain (but good quality instruments) would be great too. Any other tips/guidelines are welcome too. Thanks guys!
Three to six? Hope you can recruit a few more.
And also; unless you have a degree in music or can recruit someone who does (preferably a percussionist whose music degree is in band direction) then you're taking on an insane task. It's rather like asking yourself to win "America's Top Chef" or to design the next generation of computer chip--unless the expertise is there, it won't happen.
But for discussion purposes--if you want to do it top-level:
Nowadays, drum lines use mostly snare drums (sometimes called side drums since you sling them on your side), field toms (those are those ridiculous-looking rigs with four tuned drums on them), and bass drums (if you have enough players, you use four or five of them in different sizes so that they, too, are tuned).
There are no places to find instruments like this cheaply, since it's fairly important to the sound to have all the drums of the same make and model. Online stores like http://www.wwbw.com would be a place to look; you might also find bargains on ebay, of course...
Your first step should be to get a good percussion instructor and a stack of beginner percussion books. It will take the kids quite a while to learn how to play precisely and fast enough to impress as a drum line.
After they get the rudiments of playing down, you start to drill them on marching and field movement techniques.
You can find drum music and published routines at the bigger music stores--the ones that sell band instruments--or you might contact the music educators' association in your state.
Now, if you are just wanting to do it for fun, and getting to professional level is not a goal:
Shop for used instruments at http://www.shopgoodwill.com You'll have to be persistent, but after several months you should be able to college a half-dozen snare drums from that site (note: you need field snares, which are a little taller than they are wide--not set snares, which are about twice as wide as they are tall and are meant to be used in a drum set). Skip the field toms and splurge for one big bass drum.
Get a good percussionist to come in and instruct your charges on the fundamentals, and get her/him to write out some basic cadences for you.
Then drill the kids on basic marching: left right left and eight steps for every five yards...
Then get them to play cadences while marching. Ta da!
