Is it possible to learn to play the drums without buying a drum kit or taking lessons?
I don't want to take lessons and I don't have the space/money for a drum kit. What can I do? I really want to learn the drums. Also, how hard is it to learn compared to piano and guitar?
There are many various solutions and problems associated with your dilemma. As Ryan said, the genre you wish to learn fuels this answer heavily; it would be extremely difficult learning to play, for example, technical death metal without a proper drumset. On the other hand, if you're looking to play more simple genres such as basic rock'n'roll, then learning without a drum set would not be a very hard thing.
My advice is to get a pair of drum sticks and a couple of practice pads: These things are available at musiciansfriend.com, or, if you're short on money, craigslist and ebay.
The bare-bones basics of rock drums (An area that I am very experienced in) are the bass drum, snare drum, and hi-hat. You can go to youtube to take a look at these drums, and to hear what they sound like.
